Daimler Powerhouse Reinvention
This conceptual project proposes an alternative design philosophy to an area of North Coventry earmarked for development. The building at the time of design was derelict and about to undergo construction to convert it into a performing arts facility alongside a large adjacent development for mass housing. The proposal links to a nearby homeless shelter, providing a range of supporting uses based on a contemporary reinterpretation of an allotment.

An aquaponic process will be utilised, allowing individuals to foster community around shared labour, producing fresh produce from the on-site hydroponic units and miniature fish farm. This will then be prepared in the open kitchen, offering learning opportunities and enabling the workers to 'give back'. The self-made produce will connect with a public food bank and other facilities not provided within the current homeless shelter including a small library, internet room, lockable storage, showers and sanitary spaces and a range of different social or talking areas.

The architecture is informed by Coventry's industrial past and the varying approaches to the conservation of buildings that have fallen out of use. The building is split into approximate thirds along its length with the section closest to the canal being stripped back to 'create' a ruin which functionally acts as a communal courtyard and links to the wider landscape strategy. The middle third is enclosed within a dominant industrial 'gullwing' structure, demonstrating the idea of preservation through encasement but also allows a side extension to create a new entrance into the facility. The final third is largely retained in place with an additional receeding storey added and the prominent sawtooth roof profile accentuated.
