A simple single-storey extension that makes a huge impact to the lives of a couple of close friends. This dated bungalow was given a significant refurbishment and rear extension to provide a contemporary series of living spaces, enabling the occupants to focus on hosting visitors, entertaining and enjoy a joined-up approach to the activities of relaxing, cooking and eating.

The main form and mass of the extension matched with local vernacular expectations, being careful to not overshadow or overlook neighbours and utilise exterior materials that matched with the existing dwelling. Equally important was keeping the new -much deeper - space feeling light and airy so the roof was kept vaulted with rooflights encouraging the reduction of artificial lighting. Finally, linking the different types of activity and ensuring that there was adequate distinction between zones without making physical barriers between the movement from one area to the next was a core focus; achieved through the furniture layout and selection of finishes.
