SOPHISTICATED STRATFORD-UPON-AVON DWELLING
A project of immense personal meaning to both MWArchitectural and our client. This dwelling is the second of two semi-detached houses which were collectively designed by Geoff Thompson of Sage Gray Architects in 1997. The first home was then built by Geoff and his wife, but life got in the way and it wasn't until early 2023 that serious plans were put in place to build the second. However, shortly after, Geoff unexpectedly passed away and MWArchitectural was commissioned to assist in fulfilling the original ambition, preparing technical information and assisting during the construction phase. The original design was also tweaked to include a sun room which required planning approval.

The home is a reflection of the client's sophisticated taste and architectural thinking. The dual height space linking the first-floor living area with the kitchen-diner allows for a tremendous glazed view into the garden and creates an interconnected, convivial series of social spaces. Small rooflights punctuate activity spaces, providing backdrop natural lighting that elicit a friendly and controlled atmosphere. These naturally lit areas rise to cap the semi-circular stair core with its stained-glass slot window. Small details such as the elegant plasterboard trim (in place of traditional skirting), the deliberate contrast between blocks and curves and the choice of white render and hard interior finishes places the design ethos firmly in early twentieth century design, but completed with a fashionable contemporary twist.

Technical design was completed in late 2023 with a start on site in early 2024.
